BeyondUnreal Interview - Scott Dalton, Senior Level Designer, Legend Entertainment
World Press Preview Event: November 7, 2002
Chantilly, Virginia, USAQAPete: I gotta tell you, you guys have done things with the game and the engine that are just fabulous. Two things that come to mind immediately are the particle system and the array of really imaginative new weapons.Scott Dalton: Yeah, the particle stuff is a lot of fun. I work with that so much, I'm kinda of biased, but you can do so much with it. The weapons were kind of a sticky point. There are a lot of people who loved the first Unreal and wanted all of the exact same weapons. They didn't want anything new, they only wanted the things they knew and loved. We wanted to give them a bunch of new stuff that they can love. I'm kind of curious about how people will think about that, because we did try to give a completely new arsenal, really new behaviors, like the tracking of the Rocket Launcher, the Spider Gun, etc. We tried to make a lot of things situational, like damage types, how the Skaarj can block Assault gun projectiles. We tried to give people a whole new slab of weapons to play with.QAPete: I noticed there was no dodging in the build we were playing.Scott Dalton: It actually is in there, I believe it was just disabled by default in the config when we set up the boxes.QAPete: Is there anything else you want people to know about Unreal II: The Awakening, other than wanting people to spend that Christmas money in January on the game?Scott Dalton: We really tried to make it a cool, new experience, give you a bunch of new levels to play through, have you build up a friendship with the characters on your ship. You meet up with your shipmates between each mission, so a story develops there as well. In Obelisk, a shipmate will come down and help you out for a little while. I just hope people get into it and really enjoy what we've done with Unreal II.QAPete: Scott, thanks very much. I appreciate the time you took for this interview.Scott Dalton: You're welcome, thank you.Legend Entertainment
