Here in the upper reaches of the stratosphere reside the towers of Gazpacho, where the winds never subside, much like the competition...
hal: I have no idea why this map is named after a vegetable soup, but this layout worked very well in Unreal Tournament and it's just as smart a layout now.
There are only a couple of gripes I have with it. The beam separating the flag walkway from the Shock Rifle platform is positioned perfectly to allow players near it, in the heat of battle, to slip part of the way down into the space separating the structures. The crates near the flag ramp form a nice little hole for embattled players to slide into as well. Smoothing those areas out by resizing or adding blocking volumes wouldn't hurt the layout at all, and would allow gamers to play and not worry about snags.
The other gripe is about the spawn rooms. Previous versions of this map have included auto cannons to prevent enemy players from spawn raping opposing players. There are two rooms, and players will spawn in the empty room, but you can see where it presents a problem. Players there spawn defenseless with only three lone health vials. Armed flag carriers ensconced in these rooms will be hard to root out.
Zenny: The other maps in the pack are on polar sides of the scale of Simple and Complex. Botanic's layout is extremely straight forward, while maps like Skorbut should come with an instruction manual and a forty-two page guide. Gazpacho is a nice mix between these two extremes. They map's bases are not a protection in themselves, the defenders still have to do their jobs to prevent a flag capture.
Raffi_B: Boy, did this one bring back memories…. The layout is reminiscent of the original, yet it was not a complete remake. It definitely gave some unique gameplay opportunities that weren’t present in the original. While the theme and atmosphere are lacking, the texturing and meshwork are out in full force. Clawfist and Anarkist have revived retail mesh packages and used them in such a way that makes them look brand new. The map flows very nicely, in all senses of the word.
