FragBU: Friday July 10th, Saturday July 11th

FragBU Join it tonight, or else!!!!!!!!!!!!

We invite you to join BU staff members and your fellow BuF'ers for two nights of intense fragging through DM, TDM, CTF, vCTF, WAR, Greed, and Betrayal. If you've never been to a FragBU event before, don't worry, it's open to anyone who wants to join us for some good old fashioned gaming mayhem.

Before you start, check out the FragBU thread in the UT3 forums for the latest news, download links to the custom content, and to leave comments. All of the content is still available through the servers fast redirect, but it is still recommended to download the files before you jump on the server if you want to jump in on the action right away. There are quite a few large map packs like the excellent and often played HOLP1 and HOLP2 that would take a while even on a fast redirect.

To check on the status of the server without opening the game, you can either check the FragBU thread or log on to the official FragBU IRC channel at #fragbu on EnterTheGame where there's always plenty of people to help you out if you need any assistance. You can also get a play by play of the matches by checking out #fragbu.reporter on ETG.

If you are patiently waiting on the server and it's currently empty don't fret, it may take a while but people will eventually join. Most players do not start joining until 10pm EST but people will join earlier if they see activity on the server. So just fire up the game and join up! If idling on the server isn't working and you do not want to wait any longer, bugging people in irc to join usually works!

We hope to see you there!

Who Killed PC Gaming?

Industry Gamers asks the ever-popular question:

Who Killed PC Gaming

? Nearing the top of the list - at number two - is Windows Vista:

Vista's security measures were highly annoying to certain indie developers, since programs without the right software certificates would often be deleted by the OS. Vista also had very high system requirements and PC games typically ran slower than they did in Windows XP. Games for Windows never did lead to the high level of interaction and cross-compatibility with games on Xbox Live, nor did it significantly reduce the issues many users have with PC titles. The initial subscription charge for Games for Windows - Live was also a big mistake, leaving it chasing other subscription free services on PC like Steam.

Dante's Inferno

Singularity Delayed Thanks to Modern Warfare 2

Raven Software's UE3-powered Singularity has been

delayed by Activision

, who cited Modern Warfare 2's release window as the sole cause.

The level of excitement for Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 coming out of E3 well exceeded our expectations and therefore we have decided to move Raven's upcoming sci-fi first person action title, Singularity, from 2009 to Q1 2010.

We believe that the March quarter will provide a better opportunity to establish the new cutting-edge action IP as a 'must-have' title and clears the way for Modern Warfare 2 to dominate this holiday season.

Team 17 Developing Alien Breed Sequel

Worms developer Team 17 is (finally) developing a sequel to Alien Breed, called Alien Breed Evolved. The new game is being built with Unreal Engine 3 and will be digitally distributed by Team17 themselves. As of yet, platforms have not been mentioned but XBLA is assumed. The game is isometric view (think

Alien Swarm

). MTV Multiplayer had a chance to play the game at GDC this year, and

posted up some thoughts

about it yesterday.

Some of you in the past few days have probably heard that there is a

MechWarrior reboot title in the works

and seen the gorgeous looking teaser trailers. Well, a Q&A with Jordan Weisman, co-founder of FASA, and Russ Bullock, President of Piranha Games who is developing the new title has been

posted on IGN

Cliff Bleszinski Talks Industry In Develop Interview

Develop magazine

talks with

Cliff Bleszinski on a number of industry-related subjects, including game-engine competition, ZeniMax's acquisition of id Software, and the thing that's on everyone's mind... space marines. (thanks, Hideinlight)

I just think that the technology of this generation just happens to be very good at rendering metals and stones and dramatic lighting, which is why you see a lot of pillars and girders and destroyed blown-out areas because that’s what the bump-mapping happens to do very well.

At the same time, in this generation the translucent effects are very hard to pull off. That’s why everybody sees a lot of these bald characters and wonder why games feature so many fucking space marines. Well, the tech is good at showing off amour and it’s not that good at doing hair. That’s why we have bald space marines. There’s your answer people.

Part two

of the interview continues the industry talk with topics such as controllers, innovation in gameplay, and the ever-popular Wii.

I recall my mother phoning me up one day, saying “Clifford, I want a Wii Fit for Christmas” and I thought “holy shit it’s officially happened.” She uses that thing every day, and you can criticise Nintendo all you want, but they’ve found their market and they’re going with it.

Midway Games To Be Sold To Warner Bros.

GameSpot has word that a Delaware bankruptcy court judge approved the proposed sale of Midway Games to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for $33 million. Additionally, the judge has waived the usual 10-day waiting period for such a sale, so "[it] should close in short order".

The acquisition will give Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment most of Midway's assets, including the Mortal Kombat and Wheelman franchises. The offer does not include Midway's Newcastle (UK) and San Diego studios, nor the TNA Impact wrestling license. Earlier this month, Midway's Newcastle studio revealed its all-new IP, Necessary Force, in an effort to attract a buyer.
