Second Mass Effect DLC Details

The content of the second DLC for Mass Effect has been revealed -

something those of you who love combat are going to enjoy

. And there's even good news for those of you looking forward to the sequel.

"We had something in Mass Effect 1 which we didn't have the time and we didn't think we would do well enough, which is a fight club arena," said principal lead designer Preston Watamaniuk in the video.

"We wanted to be able to give people a much more combat-oriented, lighter-story kind of experience," said project director Casey Hudson. "You're going to go to kind of a casino, gaming, fight club space station."

The developers also dropped a few details on the anticipated Mass Effect sequel.

"Any save game that you make from Mass Effect 1, you should be able to carry that same character into Mass Effect 2," noted Hudson.

Were There Shady Deals At Midway?

Midway's creditors, no doubt

unhappy with the publisher filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

, are just a little more than upset -

and it could get very ugly, very fast

.

[Midway] was dominated and controlled until November 28, 2008, by Sumner Redstone...

As recently as February 29, 2008, [Midway's] balance sheet was far less encumbered by debt... On February 29th, 2008 [Midway took three loans from Redstone-controlled entities]... just like that [Midway's] $15 million in outstanding loan indebtedness... ballooned to $90 million... to [Redstone]...

After the consummation of these Insider Loans... the Redstone parties sold for [$100,000] all of their [holdings] to... a very secretive individual named Mark Thomas... a person virtually unknown in the video game industry...

No disclosures ever have been made regarding Thomas or what, if any, relationship Thomas or his companies have with any Redstone Party... But it is safe to assume there must be a connection... given that Redstone essentially gifted [Midway for a mere $100,000]... to Thomas...

[Thomas stands] to reap an enormous, almost unprecedented windfall... if paid in full... the Thomas Parties will recover some 30,000% on their $100,000 investment within a matter of a few months... The Thomas Parties' return stands in stark contrast to the tens, or potentially even hundreds, of millions of dollars... that the Redstone-Thomas transaction may have stolen from [other creditors]...

The Ball: Teotl Media Update, Website Launches

Hourences has posted some

new screenshots

from part three of the upcoming UT3 modification, The Ball: Teotl. The screenshots are of the new Gorilla boss model, a huge elevator, and the mod's new weapon.

The team, newly christened

Toltec Studios

, has grown to thirteen and now has a new website. Be sure to also check out their newly themed

forums

, hosted right here at BeyondUnreal.

Here are some more juicy details on what you can expect in the third installment.

The gorilla is a boss you will meet at the end of Teotl and it is quite large, few times larger than the player.

Both of our new levels are already about 70 percent complete and we have decided to completely redo the first half of Pehua and redo parts of Oztoc in order to bump up the overall quality of the mod and to introduce our story. We came up with a story that is based on actual myths and will explain what this ball is and why there are so many puzzles and traps deep into this volcano. Quality wise we are going to introduce enemies already in Oztoc to spread out our features a little, and we will create a few new and really cool puzzles and have those replace a few of the more generic puzzles found especially in Oztoc level 1. The original puzzles from Oztoc 1 will be moved into secret areas. In Pehua we will make the beginning of the mod much more interesting with a few large theatrical scenes and we will make the first few puzzles much more accessible. For example, you won't be required to push the ball up a ramp anymore, which is a bit too difficult so early in the mod.

The weapon, made by Tores and concepted by Pesti will replace the Impact hammer, technically turning us into a total conversion as we now got rid of all UT3 content. The wheel on the side will spin around and rapidly push the hammer and magnet at the front back and forth. The crystals in the skulls eye sockets will change color dependent on the weapon mode you are in.

FragBU: Friday February 13th, Saturday February 14th

Friday is here, dangerous winds are killing bunnies and babies but don't fret, stay home and stay safe by attending FragBU! You're invited to play with or against BU staff members and your fellow BuF'ers for two nights of fast and heart pumping matches which can take you from DM, TDM, CTF, vCTF, and even WAR. If you've never been to a FragBU event before, don't worry, it's open to anyone who wants to join us for some good old fashioned friendly fragging.

Before you start, don't forget to check out the FragBU thread in the UT3 forums for download links to all of the custom content we use. There are quite a few large map packs like the excellent and often played HOLP1 and HOLP2 plus many stand alone maps which all see their fair share of map play. All of the content is available through the servers fast redirect, but it is recommended to download the files before you jump on the server if you want to jump in on the action right away.

To check on the status of the server without opening the game, you can either check the FragBU thread or log on to the official FragBU IRC channel at #fragbu on EnterTheGame where there's always plenty of people to help you out if you need any assistance getting on the server.

If you are patiently waiting on the server and it's currently empty don't fret, It may take a while but people will eventually join. Most players do not start joining until 10pm EST but people will join earlier if they see activity on the server. So just fire up the game and join up! If idling on the server isn't working and you do not want to wait any longer, you can always ask people to join in the IRC channel and many will eagerly hop on.

We hope to see you there!

Just Who Did Midway Owe Money?

GamePolitics has dug up some

pretty surprising numbers on who Midway owes money to

, and it turns out a very large chunk of their $240 Million USD debt is owed to a single entity... Wells Fargo Bank. A large chunk of what's left - $40 Million - is to a holdings firm, and they even owe Epic Games $1,975,000 in licenses and royalties.

We've learned, for example, that Midway claims $167,523,000 in assets versus $281,033,000 in liabilities. Perhaps more interesting, however, is the list of Midway's top 30 creditors. Among these, Wells Fargo Bank has the most to lose. The troubled game publisher owes the bank an eye-popping $150,000,000 of unsecured loans. Others holding sizeable Midway IOUs include the current owner of the company, its former CEO and a variety of game retailers and licensees:

  • Wells Fargo Bank - $150,000,000
  • Acquisition Holdings Subsidiary - $40,000,000 unsecured loan
  • National Amusements, Inc. - $20,147,864
  • NBA Properties, Inc. - $17,294,849 (License/royalty settlement)
  • Tangible Media, Inc. - $8,675,954
  • Warner Bros. Interactive - $6,654,203
  • Artificial Mind & Movement - $2,000,000
  • Epic Games - $1,975,000 (License/Royalties)
  • Walmart - $1,576,035
  • Far Sight Technologies - $1,279,151
  • Best Buy - $1,114,036

Rumor: Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines "Under Review", Aliens RPG Axed

From high to low. Yesterday,

we reported on how Sega is pushing a new Aliens vs. Predator game

instead of Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines or Obsidian's Aliens RPG. Well, the rumor mill is a-churning, and the latest bit of potential horse puckey out of it is that Obsidian's Aliens RPG has been canned entirely -

and Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines is under the gun

.

Sega has reportedly cancelled the Aliens role-playing game that was being worked on at Knights of the Old Republic II and Alpha Protocol developer Obsidian Entertainment.

The RPG was announced in 2006, but little has surfaced since. The cancellation apparently led to 20 employees being laid off, according to Kotaku's sources.

Sega is also said to be "reviewing" Gearbox's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, leaving its fate unclear. Rumors that the game was put on hold emerged amidst November layoffs at Gearbox, but the studio quickly stated that the game was not "canned."

Section 8 Hands-On Preview

Those fine fellows at GamesRadar have

a hands-on preview of the UE3-powered Section 8

. The game, due Q4 2009, sounds pretty promising so far.

So, maps are far more dynamic. Now all the capture points start off neutral, and players can choose to be dropped anywhere on the map. And you don’t just spawn – possibly borrowed from PlanetSide, you’re launched into the atmosphere from 15,000 feet, in a process called ‘burning-in’. This is safe the first time, as everyone else is doing the same thing – but once people start capturing and building anti-aircraft guns, it becomes a bit more treacherous.

As the battle progresses, both teams acquire requisition points, and these can be spent on (among other things) mech suits, four-man tanks, supply depots, auto-firing turrets, and sensor arrays to have the enemies plotted on your mini-map. These are all placed by players, so you won’t end up with the same old choke points. You have to react to your enemy’s tactics, instead of map knowledge.

As the battles progress, you can choose ‘Dynamic Combat Missions’ to boost you requisition points and overall team score. For example, escorting or defending a specific base anywhere on the map. You reckon you can escort a truck safely across the map? Shouldn’t be any problem. Only the enemy team will all be alerted that there’s a big reward in destroying that truck.

Midway Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Neither new ownership, nor a delay on payments could prevent what some saw as simply inevitable -

Midway has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

.

After Midway was sold for a paltry $100,000, some investors were able to demand reimbursement due to the change in leadership. They initially had until mid-January to decide if they wanted to collect, but the deadline was postponed until February 19.

In all, Midway faces $240 million in debt, though only $150 million of that could be due by February 19. The company originally had until 2025 and 2026 to pay the money back.

The company plans to reorganize but "conduct its business operations as usual," with CEO Matt Booty noting that "Midway enters this process with strong underlying fundamentals, as evidenced by solid fourth quarter sales that exceeded expectations in spite of a challenging retail and general economic environment."

Aliens: Colonial Marines Delayed For New Aliens Vs. Predator Game

If you've been waiting on Aliens: Colonial Marines, the news might be a bit hard to swallow -

the game has been delayed until at least 2010

. Instead, Sega will push a new Aliens vs. Predator game first.

A new Aliens vs. Predator game will arrive in early 2010, publisher Sega has announced, with the company noting that AvP will hit before its other two Aliens games.

That means Gearbox's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC, PS3, 360) and Obsidian's Aliens RPG won't debut until 2010, at the very earliest. Colonial Marines was originally expected last year, and was recently listed as a Q1 2009 release by Sega Europe.

A possible silver lining... this new game is being developed by Rebellion, who developed the original Aliens vs. Predator.

50 Cent: Blood On The Sand Hands-On Preview

Boomtown's gotten a good

hands-on preview of the upcoming UE3-powered 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

. Aside from saying it runs on the "Gears of War engine", they reveal it's actually not that bad.

With a few touch ups in the control and visual departments, and perhaps some more variety in the levels, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand could turn out to be a solid and enjoyable shooter. Whether the issues mentioned will be addressed in the final version remains to be seen, but it’s looking promising for Fiddy’s second gig in the videogame world.
